Here's one of my favorite stories from today's news feed. It's from Fox 45 News in Baltimore, where they still have reporters who look at such things. State officials spent more than $318M during the last two years on students who might no longer attend public schools. In fact, nobody knows where they are, according to state officials.
Here's my favorite part of the report:
"Tim Guy, with the Maryland State Department of Education, told Fox45 News that a recommendation was made by the state in 2020 to change the name of Whereabouts Unknown, which was deemed to be too broad. But it took six years to make the change – which eventually came after Fox45 began reporting on the issue."
It took state education officials six years to change one simple term. That helps us to understand why they can't account for thousands of students and why they've misspent at least $318M in tax dollars.
Illinois and Minnesota are screwed up beyond recognition, but they are not alone.
